Tech Desk: India is set to establish a crucial **India’s second fighter production line** with the acquisition of additional Rafale fighter jets from France, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced. This strategic move is not only expected to bolster the nation’s defence capabilities but also significantly advance the indigenisation of military manufacturing, without impacting the ongoing indigenous Tejas fighter jet program.

Speaking at the NDTV Defence Summit 2026, Singh highlighted that France has agreed to a mandate for in-country manufacturing with substantial indigenisation, making the Rafale deal a dual-benefit proposition. He affirmed that the Tejas Mark 1A program, led by HAL, will continue its spiral development, incorporating advanced indigenous radars and weapons systems.

The Defence Secretary also addressed the Indian Air Force’s persistent concerns regarding its depleting fighter fleet and force multipliers like AEW&C aircraft and refuelers. He assured that significant progress is underway to bridge these critical capability gaps, with contracts being finalized and delivery expectations locked in. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its defence infrastructure and achieving greater self-reliance in military hardware production.
