Tech Desk: India is undergoing a significant overhaul of its infantry small-arms arsenal, prioritizing indigenous manufacturing and advanced battlefield systems. This strategic shift aims to equip soldiers with superior firepower, reduce import dependency, and enhance overall combat readiness. The legacy INSAS 5.56 mm assault rifle, after two decades of service, is being phased out due to reliability concerns.

Its replacement strategy is dual-pronged: the American SIG-716i battle rifle and the Russian-designed AK-203, now proudly produced in India as the ‘Sher’. Over 66,400 SIG 716i rifles are already deployed, with 73,000 more on order, rapidly upgrading firepower across all infantry battalions. Concurrently, the indigenously manufactured AK-203 is set to become the standard service rifle, with over 53,000 units delivered out of a massive 6,01,427 order, marking a major milestone in self-reliance.

Further boosting close-quarters combat capabilities, a ₹2,770 crore contract was awarded for 4.25 lakh modern 5.56×45 mm CQB carbines. These will replace outdated 9 mm sub-machine guns, with deliveries commencing in 2026. This push for domestic production has invigorated the private sector, with companies like SSS Defence and Adani Defence now designing export-grade weapons.

The DRDO is also innovating, having unveiled a prototype 6.8 mm assault rifle designed to balance recoil and stopping power, reflecting global trends. This extensive India small-arms modernization drive is a core component of the Future Infantry Soldier As a System (F-INSAS) program, signifying India’s decisive move towards a robust, diversified, and self-sufficient defence ecosystem.
