India Eyes Stronger Defence Partnership with UAE Amid Urgent BrahMos Missile Talks

India UAE defence partnership

Tech Desk: India is actively pursuing a deeper defence partnership with the UAE, driven by ongoing discussions regarding the potential export of India’s formidable BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akashteer air defence system. This strategic pivot comes as Abu Dhabi urgently seeks to bolster its critical infrastructure against escalating regional threats, particularly following numerous Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The BrahMos missile, a joint India-Russia venture, is renowned globally as one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles, capable of Mach 2.8-3.0 speeds. Its versatility across land, sea, and air platforms makes it a highly sought-after defence asset. Complementing this, the Akashteer system offers an advanced, automated air defence command and control network, integrating radars and weapon systems to counter modern threats like drones and cruise missiles effectively.

The UAE’s heightened interest stems from recent security challenges, including over 2,800 missile and drone attacks earlier this year, which underscored the vulnerability of its vital energy infrastructure and the critical Strait of Hormuz. For India, this potential multi-billion dollar deal signifies a significant expansion of its burgeoning defence export market, which has already surged to over ₹38,000 crore in FY 2025–26, following successful BrahMos deals with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Analysts highlight that this closer defence cooperation offers the UAE increased strategic autonomy and supplier diversification beyond traditional Western partners, all while maintaining its alliance with the U.S. This collaboration further solidifies India’s growing stature as a key global arms exporter and a net security provider in the Asia and Middle East regions, reshaping regional defence dynamics.
