India Joins Hands with UK, France & Japan to Build Next-Gen Fighter Jet Engines

India is preparing to make a landmark move in its defense capabilities by collaborating with the United Kingdom, France, and Japan to jointly design and manufacture next-generation fighter jet engines. This ambitious initiative is expected to be a game-changer for the country’s aerospace and defense sector.

The decision comes amid prolonged delays in finalizing a joint production deal with General Electric (USA) for the GE F414 engine—critical for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and TEJAS programs. With talks stagnating, the Indian defense establishment is now prioritizing enhanced domestic capabilities, supply chain reliability, and technological self-reliance.

India’s Ministry of Defence has already held extensive technical discussions with Rolls-Royce (UK) and Safran (France). Both companies have proposed full technology transfer and intellectual property co-ownership, with local manufacturing in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Safran’s proposal currently appears the most aligned with India’s AMCA program timelines, offering complete technology transfer assurances.

The French partnership is part of a massive ₹61,000 crore project to co-develop a high-performance engine capable of producing 120 kilonewtons of thrust—set to power future fighter jets, including the AMCA.

Strategically, this move signals India’s intent to diversify beyond traditional Russian dependence and its recent US-centric partnerships, instead building a balanced and multi-aligned defense network. Talks with Japan remain at an early stage, but their proposals also point toward joint development and technology sharing, similar to the UK and France.

Currently, DRDO is evaluating all proposals, while high-level defense meetings emphasize the urgency of launching the project. While the first two AMCA squadrons will still use US-made engines, the next five squadrons—over 100 aircraft—are expected to be powered by engines developed under this new multinational partnership.

India’s ultimate goal is to acquire cutting-edge technology, reduce import dependency, and elevate domestic aerospace manufacturing to a new level. The plan involves multi-tier negotiations, technology transfer agreements, joint production frameworks, and the creation of a robust local supply chain—positioning India among the select nations capable of mastering the complex art of designing and producing fighter jet engines.
