Tech Desk: The Indian Air Force has initiated a monumental ₹1 lakh crore tender to acquire 60 multi-role transport aircraft, marking a significant step towards modernizing its aging cargo fleet and bolstering tactical and strategic airlift capabilities. This ambitious program prioritizes indigenous manufacturing, ensuring substantial domestic participation in the production process.

Leading Indian defense firms are at the forefront of this competition. Tata has partnered with Lockheed Martin to propose the C-130, a proven platform already in IAF service. Mahindra Defence is collaborating with Brazil’s Embraer, offering the C-390 Millennium. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is also a strong contender, planning joint ventures with global OEMs to build aircraft locally, aligning with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” vision.

Under the terms, a significant majority of the aircraft—around 80%—will be manufactured domestically, with over 60% indigenous content expected across structural assemblies, avionics, and systems integration. This approach not only strengthens India’s aerospace industrial base but also ensures technology transfer and skill development.

Beyond troop and equipment transport, the new Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) fleet is envisioned for potential aerial refuelling roles, dramatically expanding the IAF’s operational flexibility and rapid deployment capabilities across diverse terrains, including high-altitude regions. This tender, alongside efforts for 114 Rafale jets and over 100 new trainer aircraft, underscores India’s comprehensive defense modernization drive.
