The Indian Army is all set to shed its vintage skin and embrace a lethal upgrade. In a major move to modernize its infantry and special operations capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to procure a whopping 1 lakh indigenous 9mm pistols.

This isn’t just a purchase; it’s a statement. Aligned perfectly with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, this project aims to end the reliance on foreign imports and build a robust defence ecosystem right here at home.

Out with the Old, In with the New

For decades, our soldiers have relied on the sturdy but aging 9mm pistols manufactured by Rifle Factory Ishapore. While they have served well, modern warfare—especially urban combat, counter-insurgency, and close-quarter battles—demands something lighter, faster, and smarter.

The new mandate is clear: the Army wants a “force multiplier.” The upcoming pistols will be lightweight, ensuring soldiers can manoeuvre quickly in tight spots. But the real game-changers are the features. We are looking at guns equipped with Night Sights for low-light operations, advanced targeting systems, and ambidextrous controls so they can be fired easily with either hand. Plus, they will feature accessory rails (likely Picatinny) to mount suppressors or laser sights—luxuries previously limited mostly to our Special Forces.

Battle-Ready for Extreme India

India’s terrain is unforgiving, and these guns need to be just as tough. The RFI specifies that the pistols must perform flawlessly in the most hostile environments imaginable. Whether it’s the scorching heat of the Thar Desert at +55°C or the bone-chilling heights of the Himalayas (up to 18,000 feet) at -30°C, these weapons are expected to fire without a hitch.

A Big Win for Indian Defence Industry

The MoD is looking for Indian vendors who can not only supply these weapons but also absorb Transfer of Technology (ToT). This means the design, manufacturing, and future upgrades will happen on Indian soil. The pistols are expected to be “modular,” meaning they can be upgraded or modified in the future without needing a complete replacement.

This move also ties in with the recent innovation by DRDO and the Army—a 9mm Machine Pistol featuring 3D printed parts—which showcases the growing maturity of our domestic R&D.

The Bigger Picture: Total Infantry Overhaul

This pistol procurement is just one piece of a larger puzzle. The Army is currently in the middle of a massive infantry modernization drive.

• LMGs: We are expecting the delivery of 40,000 Negev Light Machine Guns (LMGs) from Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) early next year.
• Carbines: A massive deal for nearly 1.7 lakh Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines is also in the final stages, with domestic giants like Bharat Forge and PLR Systems (a partner of the Adani Group) leading the race.

By replacing the vintage Ishapore handguns with modern, indigenous firepower, the Indian Army is ensuring that when our jawans face the enemy, they have the absolute best tools for the job.
