The Indian Army has embarked on a pivotal journey, formally launching the ambitious “Sovereign Swarm Warfare Project” to cultivate indigenous autonomy in multi-drone operations. This strategic move aims to sever reliance on foreign components, particularly Chinese, which have previously raised significant security concerns. The project, structured in two rigorous phases over six months, seeks to establish a unified, secure, and vendor-independent architecture.

The initial two-month phase will focus on developing an indigenous ground control station and a software-only integration framework, allowing existing drones to be commanded without hardware modifications. A crucial aspect is the fully offline capability, vital for contested environments. This phase culminates in a live field demonstration of persistent surveillance and coordinated payload delivery. Phase two, spanning four months, will escalate to decentralised swarm autonomy, integrating onboard computing and indigenous software stacks.

Prototypes will undergo testing in demanding operational conditions, including adaptive formations, collision avoidance, and sustained operations under communication disruptions or drone losses. The Army’s commitment to indigenous control is absolute, with source code and intellectual property jointly shared. This initiative underscores India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, securing operational sovereignty in critical defence technologies and revolutionizing drone warfare capabilities.
