In a significant move to fortify its maritime prowess, the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday inked two major ‘Indian defence contracts’ totaling ₹5,083 crore, aimed at bolstering the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy. These agreements underscore India’s commitment to enhancing its national security and promoting indigenous manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

A substantial contract worth ₹2,901 crore has been signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the acquisition of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III in the Maritime Role for the Indian Coast Guard. These state-of-the-art twin-engine helicopters, superior to existing platforms, are designed to conduct a wide spectrum of maritime security missions from both shore-based airfields and ships at sea. Their induction is crucial for protecting offshore installations, artificial islands, fishermen, and the marine environment, significantly improving the Coast Guard’s operational reach. Simultaneously, another pivotal ‘Indian defence contracts’ worth ₹2,182 crore was inked with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles and related equipment for the Indian Navy. These advanced missile systems will dramatically enhance the air defence capabilities of frontline warships against various aerial threats, ensuring rapid-reaction and all-weather engagement.

Beyond military upgrades, these projects are set to invigorate the domestic economy, engaging over 200 MSMEs in the supply chain and generating approximately 65 lakh man-hours of employment. This also reaffirms the long-standing strategic defence partnership between India and Russia.
