Philippines Eyes Major BrahMos Missile Expansion to Boost China Deterrence

Tech Desk: The Philippines is actively considering a significant expansion of its Indian-made BrahMos missile network, a strategic move aimed at bolstering its maritime security and strengthening deterrence against China in the increasingly contested South China Sea. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has confirmed plans for additional BrahMos systems, signaling robust political backing for a broader missile shield designed to protect the archipelago’s extensive coastline and strategic maritime approaches. This proposed procurement would be separate from the existing Philippine Marine Corps contract, marking a substantial escalation in Manila’s defense capabilities.

Currently, the Philippines operates three shore-based anti-ship BrahMos batteries, acquired in a landmark $375 million deal in January 2022. These systems, deployed by the Philippine Marine Corps’ Coastal Defence Regiment, are crucial to Manila’s national security strategy amidst escalating tensions with Beijing over competing claims in the South China Sea. The initial agreement included comprehensive training, maintenance, logistics support, mobile launchers, radars, and command systems, establishing a foundational defensive capability against potential maritime threats.

Reports suggest the Philippine Army’s long-standing requirement for additional land-based anti-ship missile systems is gaining significant momentum. While earlier plans envisioned two more BrahMos batteries, recent assessments indicate a potential for up to nine additional coastal missile batteries under an Integrated Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile System initiative. Such an extensive deployment across multiple islands and coastal locations would create a formidable, layered defense network. This strategic investment underscores Manila’s commitment to fortifying its territorial integrity and safeguarding its sovereign interests in a volatile regional security landscape, making the Philippines BrahMos missile acquisition a pivotal development.
