Project Kusha: India’s New 400km Air Defence Shield Reshapes Regional Security

Project Kusha India air defence

Tech Desk: Project Kusha, India’s Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS), is poised to fundamentally alter South Asia’s security landscape. Spearheaded by DRDO, this indigenous initiative, set for phased induction between 2028 and 2030, will integrate with the existing S-400 systems to form a formidable, multi-layered shield. With a 400km layered air defence network, Project Kusha introduces a significant anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) challenge for rival military planners, demanding a complete re-evaluation of traditional aerial attack strategies.

This robust three-tier model utilizes M1, M2, and M3 interceptor missiles, engaging targets from 120km up to an impressive 400km. The M3 variant specifically targets strategic assets like airborne early warning aircraft. By creating this expansive, impenetrable zone, Project Kusha compels adversaries to abandon close-proximity assaults, instead pushing them towards meticulous planning, electronic warfare, and a greater reliance on stand-off precision weaponry, such as long-range cruise missiles and UAVs.

Beyond its physical interceptors, Project Kusha embodies network-centric warfare. It features an advanced S-band AESA radar with over 500km surveillance, seamlessly linked to the IAF’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS). Mobility, via Transporter-Erector-Launchers (TELs), ensures survivability against counter-attacks. This digital integration, coupled with electronic countermeasures, underscores a relentless technological race in 21st-century aerial combat.

Crucially, Project Kusha represents a monumental step towards India’s defence self-reliance, with a ₹21,700 crore budget for five IAF squadrons. Built with domestic partners like BEL and BDL, it drastically reduces import dependency. When operational, this system, alongside Akash and MR-SAM, will fortify India’s skies, cementing its strategic position and dictating future regional military doctrines.
