This marks a significant shift from Moscow’s traditional role as a direct hardware exporter, adapting to India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” self-reliance drive. The move signals a deeper, more collaborative future for military ties.

Crucially, Moscow has indicated readiness to discuss technology sharing related to its next-generation S-500 Prometey air defense system. Rather than pushing direct sales of the highly strategic S-500, Russia is exploring joint research and technological partnerships. Such collaboration could encompass expertise in advanced target tracking, long-distance interception, and sophisticated command-and-control frameworks, greatly bolstering India’s Project Kusha and its broader air defense ambitions.

This adaptation is a pragmatic response to India’s unwavering commitment to domestic manufacturing for major military projects. Russian planners understand that insisting on perpetual foreign missile purchases is unsustainable. By proposing joint efforts, Russia ensures its continued relevance in a vital global defense alliance, moving beyond a purely vendor-client dynamic.

Project Kusha, officially the Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS), is designed to complement, not immediately replace, India’s existing S-400 squadrons. These S-400 batteries, integrated into the Indian Air Force’s IACCS, will remain critical for years. Russia continues to provide essential maintenance and support, guaranteeing its deep involvement. Project Kusha, with its planned 150-400 km interceptor variants, will reinforce India’s multi-layered shield alongside S-400 and BMD systems, creating a robust, indigenous defense network.
