This Republic Day, the Kartavya Path will not just witness a parade; it will witness a statement. As the nation gears up for the 77th Republic Day celebrations, the spotlight is firmly on the warriors—both man and machine—who recently redefined India’s zero-tolerance policy against terror.

In a move that defence experts are calling a “strategic flex,” the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army are set to showcase the heroes of Operation Sindur and the newly raised Bhairav Battalion, turning the ceremonial march into a global display of operational readiness.

The ‘Sindur’ Formation: A Message from Above

The centrepiece of the aerial display will be the fighter jets that spearheaded Operation Sindur, the massive retaliatory strike launched after the terror attack in Pahalgam.

The operation, which saw Indian forces penetrate deep into hostile territory to dismantle terror launchpads in Pakistan and PoK, was a masterclass in precision. When the adversary attempted a counter-strike, the Indian response was swift and disproportionately heavy, establishing immediate air dominance.

On January 26, these very machines will fly in a special ‘Sindur Formation’ over New Delhi. The formation will include:

• Rafale omnirole fighters

• Sukhoi Su-30MKI air superiority jets

• Jaguar deep penetration strike aircraft

• MiG-29 interceptors

Seeing the actual aircraft that executed the mission roar over the capital is expected to be an emotional moment for the public, symbolizing a promise kept.

Enter the ‘Bhairavs’: A New Breed of Warrior

While the skies belong to the IAF, the ground will shake with the boots of a brand-new entity. For the first time in history, the Bhairav Battalion will march down the Kartavya Path to salute the Supreme Commander.

The formation of this elite unit was announced by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi from Kargil, directly following the success of Operation Sindur. The logic was simple: India needed a force faster than regular infantry but lighter and more agile than traditional heavy units.

• The Blueprint: Currently, five Bhairav Battalions are operational, with a target to raise 25 within six months.
• The Soldier: Each battalion comprises roughly 250 elite troopers, specifically trained for high-impact, surprise offensives and “scoot-and-shoot” tactics.

Before their Republic Day debut, these commandos are also scheduled to showcase their mettle at the Army Day Parade in Jaipur.

More Than Just Pomp and Show

This year’s celebration is being viewed as a significant departure from tradition. It is less about pageantry and more about projecting power. By showcasing the assets used in a recent, active conflict, New Delhi is signalling that its military is not just a deterrent force, but a proactive one.

As the tricolour unfurls and the national anthem plays, the roar of the Sindur Formation will serve as a grim reminder to adversaries and a comforting assurance to citizens: the guardians of the nation are always awake.
