Indian start-up SatLeo Labs is revolutionizing defence technology with its innovative approach to Satellite Thermal Sensing For Missile Detection. Founded in Ahmedabad in 2023, the company is developing a cutting-edge constellation of 15 satellites designed to provide real-time thermal data for both military and civilian applications. This pioneering technology offers a crucial advantage in conflict zones by rapidly identifying heat signatures from surface-launched missiles in near real-time, enabling swift identification of their origins.

SatLeo Labs’ CEO, Shravan Bhati, emphasizes the proven effectiveness of infrared sensors in detecting extremely high-temperature sources. Missile plumes, often exceeding 1,000°C, are easily identifiable due to their strong radiative contrast, even against complex backgrounds. This advanced capability goes beyond missile defence, as the system can also monitor strategic infrastructure, such as nuclear reactors, by meticulously analyzing their thermal output and operational status. What sets SatLeo Labs apart is its multi-sensor payload. Unlike conventional systems, they integrate a dual-band medium-wave infrared (MWIR) sensor, a long-wave infrared (LWIR) sensor, and a visible-band camera.

This unique combination is designed to generate highly accurate and comprehensive datasets, significantly enhancing the fidelity and utility of collected information.
