Naval Group has presented its state-of-the-art Scorpène Evolved submarine to the Indian Navy, a significant upgrade aimed at bolstering India’s underwater capabilities. This next-generation vessel promises to bridge the operational gap between Project-75 and the upcoming Project-75I, offering a substantial leap in naval technology. The defining feature of the Scorpène Evolved is its complete transition to Lithium-Ion Battery (LiB) propulsion.

This innovation dramatically enhances stealth and endurance, enabling up to 78 days of submerged operations out of an 80-day mission. The rapid recharge cycles minimize the submarine’s vulnerability at periscope depth, crucial for survivability in modern warfare. Furthermore, the high energy density of LiB systems eliminates the need for traditional Air Independent Propulsion (AIP), freeing internal space and significantly reducing the acoustic signature with its Permanent Magnet Motor. Crucially for India’s strategic defense, the Scorpène Evolved proposal includes a custom Vertical Launch System (VLS) designed for indigenous BrahMos-NG supersonic cruise missiles. If adopted, this would make the Indian Navy the sole operator of a Scorpène variant with dedicated vertical strike capability, extending offensive reach. Valued at ₹36,000 crore for three additional vessels, this follow-on order ensures the continued productivity of India’s domestic submarine manufacturing infrastructure at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

With a strong commitment to over 60 percent indigenous content, including Indian-made Lithium-Ion battery cells, this pitch aligns perfectly with India’s self-reliance objectives. The proven blueprint from Indonesia’s recent order further de-risks the project, ensuring a highly advanced and reliable platform for the Indian Navy.
