Tech Desk: In a significant leap for defense self-reliance, Tata Advanced Systems has successfully completed internal trials of its indigenous Tata 155mm Mounted Gun System (MGS). This groundbreaking development ushers in a new era for India’s artillery, seamlessly blending the formidable firepower of a 155mm/52-calibre howitzer with the high mobility of a heavy-duty military truck. The MGS design eliminates the need for a separate towing vehicle, drastically enhancing both tactical and strategic mobility for the Indian Army, a critical advantage on modern battlefields.

Building on the proven Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) framework, developed by DRDO and private partners, the Tata MGS features advanced automation. Its mechanised ammunition handling system significantly reduces crew strain and accelerates the rate of fire, while an advanced Digital Gun Control ensures exceptional speed and precision in target acquisition. Designed for versatility, the system is compatible with NATO standard rounds and Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) requirements, enabling the use of extended-range projectiles up to 45 kilometres.

On the battlefield, the truck-mounted MGS offers a crucial “shoot-and-scoot” advantage, allowing rapid deployment, firing, and immediate relocation to evade counter-attacks. Its balanced design ensures excellent strategic transportability, capable of swift movement nationwide via cargo aircraft, naval ships, or highways. This successful trial underscores the Indian Army’s modernization push for automated, digitized, and independently mobile artillery. If the MGS clears official army evaluations, it will provide a highly capable, domestically produced solution, reinforcing India’s ‘Make in India’ defense commitment.
