Tech Desk: The long-awaited delivery of three US-made General Electric (GE) F404 combat aircraft engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has finally kick-started the stalled Tejas Mk1A production. This crucial shipment, part of a larger 99-engine contract, offers a much-needed boost to India’s Light Combat Aircraft program, aiming to bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) rapidly shrinking combat fleet. However, this positive development is overshadowed by significant integration hurdles and a steep production backlog, leaving the IAF still waiting for its operational jets.

The primary bottleneck remains the prolonged delay in GE F404 engine supplies, pushing the entire Mk1A program nearly three years behind schedule. GE’s challenge in reviving a dormant production line, exacerbated by the pandemic, meant the first new engine arrived two years late in March 2025. While HAL has expanded its annual capacity from 16 to 24 aircraft, aviation experts remain skeptical about GE’s ability to meet future delivery targets, hinting at continued slowdowns.

Beyond engine availability, integrating modern enhancements like the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced electronic warfare suite, and mid-air refueling capabilities presents its own set of challenges. The first Mk1A’s maiden flight in October 2025 was a milestone, but rigorous flight and weapon trials, including validating indigenous missiles and fixing software glitches, are still pending before formal induction.

This dependency on imported propulsion systems, particularly highlighted by the F404 issues, raises serious concerns for India’s future indigenous fighter programs like the Tejas Mk2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), both slated for the more powerful GE F414. With negotiations for F414 technology transfer stalled and costs skyrocketing, India’s strategic autonomy in defense manufacturing remains critically vulnerable, making the IAF’s wait for the Tejas Mk1A a stark reminder of larger systemic issues.
