Tech Desk: India’s ambitious next-generation fighter jet programs, TEJAS MK-2 and the stealthy Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), now have confirmed first flight timelines. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced that the TEJAS MK-2 prototype is expected to take to the skies by September 2027, followed by the AMCA’s maiden flight in September 2028. This clarity comes amidst significant anticipation for India’s future air power capabilities.

The TEJAS MK-2, a medium-weight fighter, is designed to replace the Indian Air Force’s aging Jaguar, Mirage-2000, and MiG-29 fleets. Powered by the General Electric F414-INS6 engine, it will feature advanced systems like the indigenous Uttam AESA radar and carry a wide array of Indian-made weapons, including Astra air-to-air missiles. Its mission set includes air superiority and deep strike operations, providing a crucial upgrade to India’s combat readiness.

Meanwhile, the AMCA represents India’s leap into fifth-generation stealth technology. This twin-engine aircraft will boast an internal weapons bay, radar-absorbing materials, and sophisticated electronic warfare systems. While the initial MK-1 variant will use F414 engines, a more powerful indigenous engine is planned for the MK-2, signaling a long-term vision for self-reliance in advanced aerospace technology. The program recently received a substantial boost with a ₹15,000 crore clearance for Full Scale Engineering Development.

However, the path forward is not without challenges. South Korea’s KF-21 Boramae program has already delivered its first production aircraft, highlighting the competitive global landscape. India faces pressure to accelerate its own development, especially with the ongoing process to finalize an industry partner for the AMCA. Despite these hurdles, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reiterated India’s commitment to developing sixth-generation fighter jets, underscoring a long-term strategic vision for air dominance.
