Tech Desk: The US Army has deployed its cutting-edge Mobile-Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System (M-LIDS) to India for the first time, showcasing its multi-layered counter-drone technology at Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026. This significant event at Rajasthan’s Mahajan Field Firing Range offers Indian armed forces a vital opportunity to observe a comprehensive approach to combating the rapidly evolving threat of drones and loitering munitions on modern battlefields.

Unlike traditional air defense, M-LIDS detects, tracks, and neutralizes aerial threats using a combination of electronic warfare and kinetic weapons. Mounted on two Oshkosh M-ATV vehicles, the system features advanced detection via Ku-band Radio Frequency Sensor (KuRFS) radar and electro-optical cameras, alongside Coyote Block 2 interceptors for longer-range destruction. For close-range threats, a 30mm automatic chain gun is deployed, while electronic jamming offers a non-kinetic option. All elements are seamlessly integrated by the Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control (FAAD C2) system, ensuring rapid response.

Operating under Operation Pathways, M-LIDS is being tested for its ability to protect critical assets like command posts and artillery within a highly networked tactical architecture. The exercise includes combined live-fire events, integrating M-LIDS with Indian and US artillery, including Pinaka rocket launchers and M777 howitzers, and features Indian AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.

While not indicating immediate procurement, the M-LIDS presence signifies deepening technical cooperation between New Delhi and Washington. This training provides India crucial insights into managing engagement costs and protecting forces from swarm attacks. Yudh Abhyas 2026 strengthens strategic interoperability, enabling US and Indian forces to coordinate fire control and exchange target data effectively in high-intensity combat scenarios.
