Tech Desk: BSNL has launched a satellite phone priced at a steep Rs 1.34 lakh, but don’t expect to add it to your everyday tech collection. This isn’t a smartphone; it’s a highly specialized communication tool designed exclusively for environments where conventional mobile networks simply can’t reach. Think remote terrains, disaster zones, or critical security operations.

The BSNL satellite phone is intended for a very specific user base. This includes defence personnel, disaster response teams, security agencies, researchers in remote locations, and professionals working in mining or maritime industries. Unlike regular phones, it connects directly to satellites, ensuring connectivity even in the most off-grid areas, making it indispensable for emergency communication and vital operations.

However, acquiring and using this device in India comes with stringent regulations. Before you can even consider a purchase, you need explicit approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Furthermore, using the BSNL satellite phone requires investing in expensive prepaid or postpaid plans, starting around Rs 5,835 per month for just 30 voice minutes or SMS, with additional charges for more usage.

Currently, BSNL’s Inmarsat-backed GSPS is the only authorized satellite phone service in India, underscoring the government’s tight control over its use. This isn’t a device for casual browsing or social media; it’s a lifeline for those operating beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure, making its high cost and regulatory hurdles justifiable for its critical, niche purpose.
