Tech Desk: Apple is reportedly breaking its long-standing iPhone launch tradition, with the standard iPhone 18 now widely expected to debut in spring 2027, a significant delay from its usual September window. This unexpected shift means consumers might wait an extra six months for the base models, a move that could redefine Apple’s annual release strategy.

The latest signals come from a Taiwanese lens manufacturer, Largan Precision, whose chairman indicated a major American client had pushed a new product launch into Q1 2027. This delay impacts component orders and factory utilization, strongly suggesting the standard iPhone 18 and a new iPhone 18e, along with a second-gen iPhone Air, are among the affected devices.

This staggered release would mark the first deliberate separation of flagship iPhone launches since the iPhone 4S in 2011. Analysts believe Apple’s move is a calculated strategy to manage two key challenges. Firstly, the expanding iPhone lineup, including a rumored foldable iPhone Ultra, strains manufacturing capacity if all models launch simultaneously.
