Agnikul Cosmos Targets Historic Booster Recovery in 2027 to Slash Space Launch Costs

Agnikul Cosmos booster recovery

Tech Desk: India’s burgeoning private space sector is on the cusp of a historic milestone as Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos targets early to mid-2027 for Mission-02, aiming for the nation’s first private recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster. This ambitious endeavor is a critical step in Agnikul Cosmos’s long-term vision to develop reusable launch systems, which promises to dramatically lower the cost of access to space and position India among a select group of nations pursuing this cutting-edge technology.

Mission-02 will utilize a two-stage configuration of the Agnibaan small-satellite launch vehicle, powered by Agnikul’s proprietary 3D-printed semi-cryogenic Agnilet engines. The mission’s primary objective centers on the first-stage booster executing a controlled descent after stage separation, followed by a planned splashdown in the sea where recovery operations will be attempted. This successful demonstration is paramount for establishing sustainable and commercially viable launch services in the future.

Beyond the pioneering Agnikul Cosmos booster recovery, the mission will also test an innovative approach to upper-stage utilization. Rather than becoming space debris, the upper stage is intended to be converted into an active orbital platform, capable of hosting scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. This concept extracts additional value from hardware traditionally designed for single-use, highlighting Agnikul’s commitment to maximizing efficiency.

To support these advanced missions, Agnikul has established new infrastructure in Chennai, including the Stage Testing and Inspection Facility (STIF) and the Pressureant Tank Realisation Overwrapping and Outfitting Facility (PROOF). These facilities enhance in-house testing and manufacturing capabilities. Following the successful Agnibaan SOrTeD flight, Mission-02 represents a significant leap from technology demonstration towards routine commercial operations. Success would not only reduce launch costs and improve operational flexibility but also showcase indigenous technologies, solidifying India’s position in the global commercial space ecosystem.
