Flipkart and Amazon Ignite Intense Battle in India Quick Commerce Market

India quick commerce

Tech Desk: Walmart-backed Flipkart is aggressively expanding its footprint in India’s booming quick commerce market, announcing a network of 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) for its ‘Minutes’ service less than two years after launch. This rapid scale-up signals a fierce battle with rival Amazon, which is also ramping up its fast-delivery ‘Amazon Now’ service, targeting 1,000 MFCs across 100 cities as it expands beyond groceries.

The competition, also featuring Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, is transforming how Indians shop. Flipkart Minutes reports a 400% growth in orders and a 20% increase in customer retention year-over-year. Crucially, demand is shifting from everyday essentials to categories like electronics, beauty, and personal care, indicating a broader adoption of instant delivery.

Both Flipkart and Amazon are strategically targeting smaller cities, with these markets driving significant growth. Flipkart saw a staggering 4,000% growth from smaller cities, while Amazon notes 70% of new Prime members come from non-metro areas. This expansion into tier-2 and tier-3 cities highlights the vast untapped potential and the evolving shopping habits across the subcontinent.

As quick commerce evolves from a grocery-centric model to a comprehensive shopping platform, India is becoming a global testing ground. Industry analysts predict the number of dark stores—small, strategically located warehouses—will soar to 7,500 by 2030, underscoring the massive investment and strategic importance of this sector.
