Hong Kong to Debut 24-Hour Humanoid Robot Convenience Store

embodied AI convenience store

Tech Desk: Hong Kong is set to pioneer the future of retail with the upcoming launch of a 24-hour convenience store entirely operated by a humanoid robot. This groundbreaking initiative, revealed by Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan, marks a significant leap for embodied artificial intelligence, bringing advanced AI out of factories and into everyday consumer spaces.

The store will feature a humanoid robot named Xiao Gai, designed to interact with customers, guide them through product selection, and facilitate purchases. This move signals a new era where AI directly engages with the physical world, moving beyond chatbots and screens to offer tangible services. The store’s innovative capsule format is adaptable, designed to showcase various merchandise, from snacks to over-the-counter medicines.

This venture follows the success of similar “Galaxy Space Capsule” stores in mainland China, with the Beijing outlet reportedly serving around 1,000 customers daily since August 2025. The technology aims to enhance customer traffic by an estimated 30-40% and position host cities as high-tech service destinations. The company behind the project plans to expand with 100 such automated stores across 10 Chinese cities.

Embodied AI, which integrates AI into physical systems like robots, allows them to perceive, decide, and act in the real world. This technology is already transforming industries from manufacturing (Tesla, Amazon) to healthcare and space exploration (NASA’s Perseverance Rover), demonstrating its broad potential to reshape daily life and commerce.
