Tech Desk: India’s battery market is exploding, projected to hit ₹1,94,000 crore by 2031, yet this rapid expansion masks a critical vulnerability: a near-total dependence on China, which controls up to 98% of the global supply chain for vital components. Despite ambitious government programs and significant investment, true India battery self-reliance remains a distant goal, realistically a decade or more away.

The surge in demand, driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics, has spurred initiatives like the National Program on Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage. India even boasts a cost advantage over nations like Japan and South Korea for manufacturing. However, this edge is undermined by structural weaknesses, including limited scale and an underdeveloped supplier ecosystem, leading to higher costs for domestically produced cells compared to imports.

Currently, India possesses only 2 GWh of commissioned cell manufacturing capacity against a staggering demand pipeline of 260 GWh. In stark contrast, China commands a cumulative capacity of 2,695 GWh. Even with over 226 GWh of announced capacity by 2035 and incentives like PM E-DRIVE and FAME-II, execution delays and reliance on foreign licensors mean India’s journey to a globally competitive, self-sufficient cell industry is protracted.

The immediate opportunity lies in localizing downstream components like battery packs. Yet, the broader challenge for India battery self-reliance is strategic: securing raw material supply chains, rapidly scaling domestic production, and investing heavily in indigenous R&D. Without these foundational shifts, India risks perpetual dependence on China, even as it races to meet its clean energy and electric mobility targets.
