Tech Desk: In a significant move, India has directed GitHub to remove BitChat, the decentralized peer-to-peer messaging application, citing grave national security concerns. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, issued the order, emphasizing BitChat’s capacity for anonymous communication without mandatory registration or centralized logging. This anonymity, according to authorities, hinders lawful interception and investigations, posing a challenge to public safety.

BitChat, launched by ex-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, operates uniquely using Bluetooth mesh technology, allowing messages to hop between nearby devices within a 30-100 meter range without needing an internet connection. This end-to-end encrypted system gained public attention during recent NEET exam protests, underscoring its potential for untraceable communication.

However, advocates for digital rights, including SFLC.in, have criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the takedown order, questioning its adherence to accountability requirements. They warn that this action sets a troubling precedent, potentially stifling innovation and restricting legitimate uses of encrypted and decentralized communication tools within India.
