Nirmala Sitharaman Flags Unprecedented Anthropic Mythos AI Risk for Banks, Urges Enhanced Vigilance

Anthropic Mythos AI risk

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has issued a critical warning to India’s banking sector regarding the emerging `Anthropic Mythos AI risk`. Chairing a high-level meeting with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, bank leaders, and stakeholders, Sitharaman emphasized the unprecedented nature of threats posed by advanced AI models, particularly Anthropic’s Claude Mythos.

The meeting on April 23, 2026, highlighted growing concerns over this sophisticated AI, about which ‘not much is known, not very many people have tested or tried.’ Sitharaman stressed that current cybersecurity measures are insufficient, calling for ‘something far more versatile to be able to counter the newer threats.’ She urged banks to collaborate, understand necessary investments, and develop technologies where AI itself can counter AI-related challenges.

The Ministry of Finance’s X post underlined the need for ‘a very high degree of vigilance, preparedness and better coordination across financial institutions.’ Banks are advised to proactively secure IT systems, safeguard customer data, and report any suspicious activity, reinforcing India’s defense against this evolving `Anthropic Mythos AI risk`.
