Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for ‘Work From Home’ (WFH) and reduced travel has found significant resonance within India’s technology sector. Amidst escalating global geopolitical tensions, industry body Nasscom confirmed on May 11 that IT firms are actively implementing remote and hybrid work models “where operationally appropriate.” This strategic shift aims to reduce energy consumption and commuting, aligning with national efforts for prudent resource management. Nasscom emphasized that Indian tech companies already operate on well-established hybrid frameworks, balancing work-from-home with in-office attendance based on specific role and customer requirements. This flexible approach is not new but part of the industry’s robust operational resilience strategies, ensuring business continuity even during disruptions.

The statement comes as a direct response to the call for energy-saving measures across campuses due to the ongoing Middle East tensions. Meanwhile, the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has amplified the call, urging the Ministry of Labour and Employment to issue a government advisory mandating WFH for the IT/ITES sector. Citing the Prime Minister’s appeal, NITES highlighted the sector’s proven ability to maintain productivity during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that mandatory remote work could significantly reduce fuel dependency, traffic congestion, and environmental strain, while safeguarding economic activity.

Both industry and employee bodies underscore the strategic importance of remote work in India’s technology landscape. While Nasscom stresses existing frameworks and sustainability, NITES advocates for a formal mandate to leverage the digital infrastructure for national interest. This dual perspective highlights the evolving dynamics of the WFH for IT sector, balancing corporate flexibility with broader socio-economic and environmental goals.
