Designed to combat the pervasive threat of online fraud, this optional tool employs an on-device machine learning model to detect and warn users about potential scam messages from unknown contacts. This vital update comes as Meta officially detailed the feature earlier this month, emphasizing its role in safeguarding conversations.

The “WhatsApp Scam Alert” functionality, first spotted by WABetaInfo, runs silently on your device, analyzing incoming messages from non-contacts for patterns associated with known scams. When a suspicious message is identified, a discreet warning appears within the chat, visible only to the user. This empowers individuals to immediately block, report, or continue the conversation with informed caution.

Users maintain full control; the feature can be manually enabled via Settings > Account. WhatsApp has confirmed it complements their end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy while enhancing security. If a warning is incorrect, users can mark the chat as trusted, and the alert will not reappear. They can also contribute to improving accuracy by sharing their last five messages with WhatsApp – a process that Meta assures does not automatically report message content to WhatsApp or any third party, preserving user data integrity.
