YouTube Shorts Get Faster: New Update Doubles Playback Speed, Revamps Interactions

YouTube Shorts update

Tech Desk: YouTube Shorts is rolling out a significant update allowing users to double the playback speed, effectively making these already brief videos even shorter. This key change, alongside other new features, aims to enhance the user experience by helping viewers absorb information more quickly or pinpoint favorite moments faster within their preferred short-form content. It’s part of YouTube’s ongoing effort to refine its rapidly growing platform in the competitive short-form video market.

Beyond speed, the platform is also overhauling how users interact with content. The traditional dislike button has been removed; users are now encouraged to utilize “Not Interested” or “Don’t recommend this channel” functions to signal unwanted content. Similarly, expressing approval for a video will now be done via a heart emoji, replacing the familiar thumbs-up icon, signaling a shift towards more positive and clear engagement.

Another notable addition is the “Clear Screen mode,” designed to temporarily hide all icons and text during playback, offering an uncluttered viewing experience. These comprehensive changes are all geared towards creating a more intuitive and streamlined Shorts environment, reflecting user feedback and evolving viewing habits. While YouTube was a late entrant to the short-form video space, launching Shorts in 2024, it has rapidly attracted a massive audience, boasting an impressive 200 billion daily views as of June 2025, demonstrating its strong position.

The company stated that these features would be rolling out over time, without providing exact dates. This strategic update underscores YouTube’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its competitive edge in the dynamic landscape of short-form video content, catering to a user base that increasingly values efficiency and clarity.
