Trump Waives Key Russia Sanctions, Easing 100% Tariff Threat on India

Trump Russia Sanctions Waiver India

Tech Desk: In a significant move just a day before their scheduled implementation, US President Donald Trump has granted a crucial waiver on several sanctions and tariffs linked to Russian exports. This decision offers immediate relief to major energy importers like India and China, sidestepping a potential 100% tariff on their goods entering the United States. The executive order, issued on Friday, cited national interest as the rationale, allowing the administration to suspend measures authorized under the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.

This waiver, however, postpones rather than eliminates the Russia-related tariffs, leaving the door open for their reintroduction. The original legislation, signed by Trump last month, aimed to intensify economic pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict, targeting Russian officials, financial institutions, and energy interests. Critically, it also empowered the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from major buyers of Russian oil and gas, with India being a prominent country facing this exposure.

For India, the reprieve removes an immediate trade hurdle that could have severely strained bilateral economic ties with Washington. New Delhi had consistently emphasized its national priority of energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens, advocating for diversified sourcing strategies. The Ministry of External Affairs had engaged extensively with US officials, highlighting broader implications for both bilateral relations and international energy markets.

This decision also reflects wider concerns regarding the potential disruption to global oil supplies and soaring energy prices if aggressive sanctions were to target major importers of Russian crude. Coming amidst Trump’s increasingly critical stance on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a more accommodating approach towards Moscow, the waiver underscores a complex shift in US foreign policy, albeit with the underlying authority for future tariff action remaining intact.
