BrahMos-NG Prototype Targeted for 2027-28, 1,500km Variant on Long-Term Roadmap

BrahMos-NG Prototype

Tech Desk: India’s advanced missile program is set for a significant leap, with the BrahMos-NG Prototype targeted for development between 2027 and 2028. This next-generation cruise missile promises a more compact, lightweight, and stealth-oriented design, building on the formidable legacy of its predecessor. Adding to this ambition, BrahMos Aerospace also has a 1,500-kilometre strike range variant firmly on its long-term roadmap, showcasing India’s evolving defence capabilities.

BrahMos Aerospace CEO Dr. Jaiteerth Joshi confirmed accelerated research and bolstered supply networks, driven by surging international interest. The existing air-launched BrahMos system recently proved its mettle during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, executing flawless precision strikes against critical Pakistani military targets, including the Nur Khan airbase. Notably, the missile successfully evaded enemy radar, striking its targets in real-time without a single interception – a performance that has significantly boosted global demand, especially from nations operating Sukhoi-30 aircraft, who are now showing early interest in the upcoming BrahMos-NG.

To meet these burgeoning commitments and export orders, BrahMos Aerospace is massively scaling up its manufacturing operations across multiple facilities. The company is strategically expanding its supply chain to include up to 45 different suppliers per sub-system, fostering competitive pricing and ensuring a robust production line, even during emergencies. With recent landmark deals, including initial sales to the Philippines in 2022, Vietnam in May 2026, and Indonesia in July 2026, BrahMos exports are projected to surpass the $600 million mark, cementing its position as a cornerstone of India’s defence exports. The Ministry of Defence’s recent contract for naval BrahMos systems, mandating 68% indigenous content, further solidifies India’s push for total self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
