Unlock Savings: Government Introduces Concessional FASTag Local Pass from November 2026

FASTag local pass

Tech Desk: The government is set to introduce a landmark concessional FASTag local pass on November 1, 2026, offering substantial savings for non-commercial vehicle owners residing within a 20km radius of National Highway toll plazas. This much-anticipated initiative aims to significantly ease the financial burden on local commuters, providing annual passes at a highly competitive rate. The cost will be Rs 1,500 for toll plazas located outside municipal or local town limits, increasing to Rs 3,000 for those situated within these areas. This represents a considerable reduction compared to the standard annual FASTag pass, which is projected to cost Rs 3,075 in the 2026-27 fiscal year.

To qualify for this benefit, vehicle owners must prove residence within the specified 20km vicinity of the toll plaza. Additionally, they must possess a valid and functional FASTag that is specifically registered for non-commercial vehicle use. An important restriction to note is that the FASTag local pass will be valid exclusively at the designated toll plaza and cannot be utilized at any other location. The scheme also has specific exclusions: it will not apply to National Highways or expressways that operate a closed user-fee collection system, nor will it be available at toll plazas where a service road or an alternative free road is already provided for commuters.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways officially notified this scheme on October 26, 2026, under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2026. This new provision offers eligible residents a valuable alternative to existing monthly passes. While initial availability will be directly at eligible toll plazas, the convenience factor will be further enhanced as the pass becomes available through the Rajmargyatra app starting December 1, 2026. This ensures wide accessibility and makes securing the new FASTag local pass straightforward for eligible beneficiaries.
