India Forges Key Partnerships to Become a Global Shipbuilding and Maritime Hub by 2047

India Global Shipbuilding and Maritime Hub

Tech Desk: India is aggressively advancing its ambition to become a premier India Global Shipbuilding and Maritime Hub by 2047, intensifying strategic collaborations with South Korea and Cyprus. This significant push aims to consolidate global supply chains, secure crucial maritime financing, and forge advanced technology partnerships vital for its long-term naval architecture goals. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently led a delegation to Busan, engaging top South Korean shipbuilders, financial institutions, and research bodies.

Parallel discussions with Cyprus’s Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis secured formal backing for India’s EU certification initiative for ship-recycling facilities. A Cypriot delegation will visit India in 2026 to explore commercial tie-ups in ship management and marine technology, highlighting a shared commitment to economic dividends. These diplomatic efforts are underpinned by robust policy frameworks accelerating domestic shipbuilding growth under Prime Minister Modi.

Engagements with South Korean industrial giants, including Sejin Heavy Industries and KOMERI, focused on joint manufacturing of massive shipbuilding blocks, LNG/LPG cargo containers, and advanced cryogenic structures. Cochin Shipyard Limited is evaluating joint ventures for block fabrication, aiming to enhance indigenous capacity for advanced vessels. This technical sovereignty is crucial as the global maritime industry shifts towards cleaner, high-efficiency solutions, merging South Korean technological supremacy with India’s expanding manufacturing base.

Further talks with HMM explored flagging vessels and recruiting Indian merchant navy personnel, while discussions with Korea Ocean Business Corporation invited investments into India’s port infrastructure, including the ₹76,220-crore Vadhvan Port mega-project. With a USD 7.8 billion maritime support package boosting output by over 80% in 2026 and a USD 23 billion pipeline of 400 vessels, India is firmly on course to localize heavy industrial manufacturing and establish itself as a dominant India Global Shipbuilding and Maritime Hub by 2047.
