Iconic Ducati Faces Potential Sale as Volkswagen Group Revamps Portfolio

Ducati sale

Tech Desk: Volkswagen Group, the automotive giant owning brands like Audi and Lamborghini, is reportedly considering the sale of its renowned motorcycle brand, Ducati. Amidst significant financial pressures, including plans to lay off 50,000 employees and slim down its vast portfolio, the iconic Italian superbike manufacturer has once again found itself under evaluation for a potential change of ownership.

Confirmations from both Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali and Audi CEO Gernot Dollner underscore that Ducati is part of a broader review of Volkswagen’s 2,000 businesses. While no final decision has been made, the possibility is very real. Ducati, which reported a robust EUR 925 million revenue and EUR 52 million operating profit in 2025, was previously considered for sale in 2017, only for the group to reverse course.

Adding to the speculation, Italian investor Patritalia has already expressed strong interest in acquiring Ducati, following a similar bid for MV Agusta. However, Patritalia’s proposed plans, which include becoming the sole engine supplier for Moto2 and a preference for an all-Italian workforce, have generated considerable controversy. With current Moto2 supplier Triumph having long-term commitments and Liberty Media’s involvement, Patritalia’s ambitious proposals face significant hurdles, making the future of the beloved “Borgo Panigale” brand uncertain.
