Tech Desk: India’s SUV market is about to get a significant new contender as Renault prepares to launch the Duster hybrid on October 17. This marks the third powertrain option for the popular Duster, introducing a robust strong-hybrid system that promises both efficiency and performance, drawing on Renault’s Formula 1 expertise.

The new Duster hybrid, powered by Renault’s E-Tech system, combines a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors – a 20hp generator and a 49hp drive motor. Together, this setup delivers a combined 160hp and 172Nm of torque, supported by a larger 1.4kWh battery pack. This sophisticated system aims to offer a compelling alternative in the midsize SUV segment.

What truly sets the Duster hybrid apart is its multi-mode automatic gearbox. Unlike Toyota’s e-CVT system, which provides a largely step-free driving experience, Renault’s E-Tech uses fixed gear ratios. Drivers can expect more traditional gear engagements as the system intelligently switches between electric, engine, or combined power modes. Renault claims this innovative approach will enable up to 80 percent of city drives in pure EV mode, offering substantial fuel efficiency gains.

This strong-hybrid variant is poised to fill the void left by the absence of a diesel engine option, directly challenging key rivals like the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder strong-hybrids. Its unique blend of power, efficiency, and distinct driving dynamics makes the Renault Duster hybrid a highly anticipated arrival.
