Tech Desk: China has reportedly suspended the delivery of the remaining 16 J-10CE fighter jets to Pakistan, a move underscoring significant financial strains on their long-standing defense partnership. The halt comes as Pakistan struggles to meet crucial pre-delivery payment obligations, following the initial handover of 20 aircraft largely funded by Chinese loans.

Pakistan initially ordered 36 of the 4.5-generation J-10CE fighters to counter India’s acquisition of Dassault Rafale jets. However, Islamabad’s severe economic difficulties, including dwindling foreign exchange reserves, have made it unable to clear the dues required for the final batch. This financial roadblock threatens to delay the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) plans to fully operationalize its new fighter squadrons.

The issue has even drawn attention and frustration from the Chinese public on social media, highlighting the importance of payment schedules for Beijing’s expanding defense export industry. Despite the current pause, the J-10CEs already delivered have significantly impacted Pakistan’s military capabilities, even seeing operational deployment during border clashes in May 2025 with Chinese technical support.

Military analysts suggest that temporary pauses are normal during economic hardship. Both nations are expected to seek a compromise, possibly involving restructured payment plans, during upcoming high-level meetings. This incident reveals a shifting dynamic where harsh economic realities are increasingly dictating the speed of military hardware transfers, even between close strategic allies.
