Indian Army Revolutionizes Counter-Drone Tactics with UAV-Launched Interceptor Drones

UAV-Launched Interceptor Drones

Tech Desk: The Indian Army is spearheading a strategic shift in its counter-drone operations, moving towards the deployment of UAV-Launched Interceptor Drones. This innovative approach aims to dramatically enhance response times, range, and loiter capabilities against the rising threat of low-cost, expendable rogue drones. By utilizing existing Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) and Short-Range UAVs as “motherships,” interceptors can be positioned at optimal altitudes, eliminating the energy-intensive initial climb phase.

This tactical advantage directly translates to extended operational range and prolonged loiter time for the interceptors. They can now pursue, track, and neutralize highly maneuverable kamikaze drones or loitering munitions with unprecedented efficiency, a critical upgrade from traditional ground-based systems. The move addresses the inherent physical limitations faced by ground-launched interceptors, which rapidly deplete battery reserves during ascent.

The Army is heavily engaging India’s private defence sector to rapidly achieve this capability. The focus is on retrofitting existing fleets to carry modified Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) interceptors, originally designed for ground troops. This presents a unique engineering challenge, requiring robust design modifications and specialized launcher interfaces for safe mid-air separation and flight stabilization.

This push for UAV-Launched Interceptor Drones is a vital component of India’s multi-layered counter-drone architecture. Complementing handheld kinetic drone-killers and AI-paired armed helicopters, this airborne interception strategy ensures the armed forces can effectively outpace the escalating complexities of modern drone warfare, building a comprehensive defence shield.
