Race for India’s AMCA Heats Up: Tata, L&T, Bharat Forge Vie for Historic Prototype Deal

India's AMCA

Tech Desk: India’s quest for a fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), has entered a critical phase as private sector giants prepare bids for the prototype development deal. With the deadline extended to October 30, 2026, the Ministry of Defence is poised to select a Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) within months, tasked with building five flying prototypes and one structural test platform. This ₹15,000 crore government-funded initiative aims to establish a crucial second domestic fighter production line, diversifying India’s aerospace capabilities beyond HAL.

The competition has narrowed to three formidable contenders. Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) stands as the sole independent bidder, leveraging its experience in military aircraft assembly but facing challenges in comprehensive fighter jet program leadership and in-house electronics. In contrast, the L&T, BEL, and Dynamatic Technologies consortium offers a balanced profile of integration, electronics, and aerostructures, though they lack supersonic combat aircraft development experience.

The third consortium, led by Bharat Forge with BEML and Data Patterns, brings heavy manufacturing, electronic warfare, and avionics expertise. Their primary hurdle will be rapidly developing specialized large-scale aircraft airframe assembly capabilities. Notably absent from this phase is HAL, disqualified on technical grounds but expected to re-enter for mass production.

The winning bidder faces stringent timelines, including the establishment of a new, Indian-majority-owned entity and the maiden flight of the first prototype within 30 months of contract signing. The project mandates 1,800 test flights over seven years for the five prototypes. Ultimately, the Indian Air Force plans to procure around 126 AMCA jets, with full-scale production targeted by 2035, marking a monumental leap for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing.
