Tech Desk: India is on track to achieve its ambitious India’s Rs 50,000 Cr Defence Export Target by 2028, a significant two years ahead of the government’s initial 2030 deadline. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced this remarkable progress, citing a surge in global demand for indigenous military hardware. Orders have already reached Rs 38,000 crore, propelling annual exports from a mere Rs 686 crore in 2013-14 to a record Rs 38,424 crore in 2025-26.

This accelerated growth is largely driven by India’s competitive pricing, especially in the missile segment. Indian-made missiles are offered at nearly one-fourth the cost of foreign OEM alternatives, making them highly attractive to international buyers. Products like the coveted BrahMos missile are already being sold or are in the process of being sold to several Southeast Asian countries, alongside growing interest in artillery, mounted gun systems, and the Akash surface-to-air missile system.

The government is actively fostering a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem, aiming for multiple production lines for fighter aircraft, missiles, and drones. This expansion, coupled with opening up ammunition and propellant production to the private sector, is bolstering self-reliance and creating a strong foundation for larger platforms like the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

Beyond economic gains and job creation, these defence exports are crucial for establishing long-term strategic relationships, providing buyer countries with essential maintenance, spares, and supply chain support. India’s burgeoning defence industry is not just meeting targets; it’s redefining its global role.
