Tech Desk: India has officially issued a Letter of Request (LoR) to France for the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets, a significant move towards bolstering its air power and self-reliance. Valued at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore, this government-to-government deal marks one of India’s largest defence procurements in history. Crucially, 94 of these advanced 4.5-generation-plus aircraft are slated for production in India under a partnership between Dassault Aviation and an Indian company. This marks the first time Rafale jets will be manufactured outside France, with localization levels projected to reach around 50 percent.

This landmark “Make in India” component is expected to generate substantial industrial benefits and significantly strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities. The remaining jets will be delivered directly from France. The French government is anticipated to respond to the LoR within two to three months, with negotiations expected to conclude within a year, paving the way for contract signing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France in mid-June is expected to feature these discussions prominently, highlighting the strategic importance of the Rafale deal for both nations.

The induction of these Rafales is vital for addressing the Indian Air Force’s critical squadron shortfall, a long-standing concern. With 62 Rafale aircraft already ordered for the IAF and Navy, this new procurement will push India’s total Rafale fleet to 176, potentially exceeding 200 with the Navy’s stated intent to induct 31 more. This strategic acquisition aims to enhance India’s air combat capabilities in the near term, serving as a critical bridge until indigenous programs like TEJAS MK-2 and AMCA fully mature. The deal also emphasizes transparency, allowing India full authority to integrate indigenous weapons and systems, reinforcing its path towards strategic autonomy.
