Indian Navy Eyes Game-Changing Air-Launched Torpedo Kit Amid Rising Chinese Submarine Threat in IOR

Indian Navy air-launched torpedo

Tech Desk: The Indian Navy is strategically exploring an advanced air-launched, rocket-assisted torpedo system, poised to significantly bolster its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This crucial initiative directly addresses the escalating threat posed by the rapid expansion and frequent deployment of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarines, which increasingly frequent the region.

This innovative weapon, designed for deployment from both manned fighter jets and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), represents a paradigm shift from traditional close-range torpedo drops. It involves attaching a sophisticated range-extension kit to a conventional lightweight torpedo. Once launched from an aircraft, a small propulsion unit would propel the weapon up to 250 kilometres, allowing the launch platform to operate safely outside enemy air defence envelopes. This stand-off capability is vital.

Upon reaching the designated target zone, the flight kit would detach, enabling the torpedo to autonomously enter the water with a very low acoustic profile and hunt hostile submarines. Modern naval vessels are increasingly equipped with lethal surface-to-air missiles, making traditional close-proximity ASW operations hazardous for critical aviation assets like the P-8I Poseidon. This new approach mitigates such risks.

Drawing parallels with DRDO’s surface-launched Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system, this air-launched concept brings similar long-range flexibility to naval aviation. While still in its conceptual phase, this project underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its maritime security. Its successful development will require extensive research, rigorous testing, and complex platform integration over the next decade, ultimately fortifying India’s position against emerging undersea threats in the IOR.
