India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to equip frontline Indian Navy warships with the DURGA-2, a powerful 100-kilowatt high-energy laser weapon. This marks a significant leap in the nation’s directed energy warfare capabilities, offering a rapid and cost-effective shield against evolving aerial threats. The system is specifically designed to neutralize drones, loitering munitions, and incoming anti-ship missiles, transforming naval defense. Dubbed Directionally Unrestricted Ray-Gun Array, the DURGA-2 significantly upgrades India’s previous 25 kW laser systems, which primarily served as dazzlers.

The new 100 kW variant delivers destructive thermal energy, capable of incinerating drone airframes mid-flight and scrambling the infrared seekers of cruise missiles. This escalation makes it a lethal defensive tool rather than just a deterrent. The DURGA-2 builds on successful prior demonstrations, including a 30 kW truck-mounted system that destroyed drones at five kilometres in April 2025. Engineers are currently “marinizing” the technology, adapting it for the harsh, corrosive naval environment. Once operational, these advanced lasers will be deployed on the Visakhapatnam-class stealth destroyers, India’s most modern surface combatants. Unlike conventional missiles, lasers offer virtually unlimited magazines and rapid retargeting, making them ideal for countering swarm attacks and saturation tactics. This capability not only enhances the survivability of Indian warships but also redefines the economics of naval defence.

India joins an elite global group, including the US and China, in fielding such advanced systems. This strategic move under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative addresses the growing challenge of low-cost aerial threats, ensuring India’s maritime shield remains formidable. Upcoming trials will be crucial in proving the system’s sea-readiness, heralding a new era for the Indian Navy’s defensive posture in the Indo-Pacific.
