Indian Navy Intensifies Rafale M STOBAR Compatibility Trials for INS Vikrant in Goa

Rafale M STOBAR compatibility

Tech Desk: The Indian Navy is conducting critical flight trials of the French-made Rafale Marine (Rafale M) fighter jets at the Shore Based Test Facility (SBTF) in Goa, with a laser focus on its STOBAR compatibility for the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. This rigorous evaluation is a pivotal step, ensuring these advanced jets can seamlessly operate from Vikrant’s unique Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery system, a significant technical adaptation for an aircraft originally designed for CATOBAR carriers.

These trials are vital for the successful integration of the 26 Rafale M fighters, procured under a Rs 64,000 crore agreement with France, with deliveries expected by 2030. Beyond validating ski-jump launches and arrested landings, the evaluations are ensuring structural and operational harmony with INS Vikrant’s infrastructure. The Rafale M, a versatile twin-engine aircraft, brings formidable air defence, reconnaissance, and strike capabilities, armed with advanced missiles like Meteor, MICA, and SCALP.

Successfully adapting the Rafale M to STOBAR operations will not only significantly enhance INS Vikrant’s combat power but also bolster India’s maritime strike capabilities. The indigenous integration of Indian missiles and the establishment of a local maintenance hub further underscore the strategic importance of these trials, marking a new chapter in naval aviation and defence self-reliance.
