Tech Desk: A groundbreaking venture, Warhound, has emerged from stealth with a staggering $200 million in funding, aiming to revolutionize military and law enforcement operations with genetically engineered war dogs. Backed by investors including Sequoia and the CIA-affiliated In-Q-Tel, Warhound, co-founded by Colossal Biosciences’ Ben Lamm and Anduril’s Palmer Luckey, is valued at $1.2 billion. These highly specialized canines, currently in development, are designed to tackle perilous tasks like bomb detection and search operations, areas where human and machine capabilities fall short.

The initiative addresses a critical shortage: over 80% of U.S. military working dogs are sourced from Europe, with many failing to meet service standards due to inherited health issues. Warhound plans to genetically enhance top breeds like Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds, optimizing them for health, longevity, speed, agility, and superior olfactory senses. This involves editing genes to boost performance and eliminate predispositions to common ailments like hip dysplasia or cancer.

Beyond genetic enhancements, Anduril will equip these genetically engineered war dogs with advanced hardware and software, including protective vests with data sensors and specialized goggles. These additions aim to improve situational awareness for handlers and further safeguard the dogs, making them even more effective in the field. The first clones are expected early next year, with service potentially beginning within two years.

Warhound is also collaborating with the American Humane Society to ensure ethical training and facilitate retirement programs for these advanced working dogs, emphasizing their welfare alongside their mission-critical roles. This venture marks a significant leap in defense technology, promising a new era for canine partners in dangerous operations.
