Winter’s Wrath Ignored: Terrorists Break Pattern in J&K’s ‘Chilai Kalan’, Security Forces Face New High-Altitude Challenge

The bone-chilling forty-day period known as ‘Chilai Kalan‘ (December 21 to January 31) usually hits the pause button on life in the Kashmir Valley, traditionally freezing terrorist activities along with the landscape. However, this winter has thrown up a worrying anomaly, forcing security agencies to redraw their strategies.

Defying the extreme weather, terrorists have remained disturbingly active, prompting the Indian Army to launch an intense, week-long operation targeting a group of 30-35 hardened Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operatives hidden in the rugged terrain.

A Desperate Shift in Tactics

Security officials note a distinct shift in the usual operational pattern. Instead of lying low in hideouts or waiting for the thaw, terrorists are active in the high-altitude pockets of the Doda and Kishtwar districts.

Intelligence inputs suggest this new pattern stems from desperation. Following widespread public anger after the recent Pahalgham attack, local support—crucial for shelter and logistics during winter—has largely dried up. Isolated and denied refuge in villages, these groups are forced into the unforgiving higher reaches.

A senior intelligence officer commented on the situation, noting the immense risk the terrorists are taking. Surviving at such altitudes in winter is a logistical nightmare and a severe health hazard, making them vulnerable to being spotted by the Army. Yet, they are taking this risk, likely desperate to carry out small strikes to prove their relevance.

The Security Response: Winter Warfare and ‘Operation Sindoor’

The Indian security establishment is adapting swiftly to this new reality. The Army had already launched ‘Operation Sindoor‘ to avenge the Pahalgham attack and dismantle terror infrastructure, which has significantly weakened their network.

With robust counter-infiltration grids making fresh crossings from Pakistan nearly impossible, handlers across the border are desperately trying to activate sleeper cells already present in the Valley. Officials believe any successful strike, no matter how small, is needed by them to boost morale and aid fresh recruitment.

The security forces are rising to the challenge. The traditional lull in winter operations is a thing of the past. The Army has intensified its presence, establishing snowbound bases and conducting difficult operations in freezing, treacherous terrain.

Eternal Vigilance

Recognizing the evolving threat, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has explicitly ordered maximum alertness during periods of snowfall, often used as cover for movement.

The message from the ground is clear: the concept of a seasonal war is obsolete. If the terrorists are not stopped by the weather, India’s security forces will remain on high alert 24/7, ensuring that this new winter challenge is met with unwavering resolve.
