Meta Tests Controversial Facial Recognition from Military Supplier for Smart Glasses

Meta facial recognition smart glasses

Tech Desk: Meta is reportedly testing advanced facial recognition technology for its smart glasses, sourced from a supplier with deep ties to the US military and law enforcement. This revelation raises significant privacy questions as the social media giant explores integrating such powerful biometric capabilities into wearable tech. The supplier, Rank One Computing, known for its defense contracts, is providing Meta with technology that includes “liveness detection,” a feature designed to distinguish real people from photos or masks.

Rank One Computing, a Denver-based firm, generates approximately 80% of its revenue from government clients, including the US military and law enforcement agencies. Its leadership comprises former FBI, CIA, and Pentagon officials, highlighting the robust security background of its technology. The company reportedly licensed Meta a massive database of up to 10 million facial templates, indicating the scale of this testing.

Traces of Rank One Computing’s facial recognition technology were discovered within the Meta AI app, though the code was not actively scanning users’ faces. While Meta has previously developed its own in-house system, NameTag, the current status of its facial recognition efforts remains unclear, with the company stating it’s testing features within US laws and regulations. This development marks a pivotal moment for privacy advocates and consumers alike, as the lines between personal tech and sophisticated surveillance tools continue to blur.
