Elon Musk’s social media platform X has launched XChat, a standalone messaging app designed exclusively for iPhone users. Positioned as a direct XChat WhatsApp rival, this new application emphasizes user privacy and security. It offers end-to-end encrypted private chats, secure file sharing, and both audio and video calls, aiming to provide a dedicated, ad-free, and tracking-free communication space. Key features include disappearing messages, the ability to edit and delete messages, and crucial screenshot blocking, enhancing user control over their conversations.

XChat requires an X account for sign-in, enabling users to instantly connect with their existing network without needing phone number swaps or new invitations. The app’s description highlights its robust privacy framework, stating that every message is end-to-end encrypted with a unique key pair, protected by a device-bound PIN. This launch signifies a strategic shift for X, moving away from Elon Musk’s initial “everything app” vision towards specialized applications. XChat replaces the discontinued Communities feature, becoming the primary messaging hub.

Tested extensively with beta users, XChat is set to evolve further, with its lead designer Benji Taylor indicating this is “just the beginning” for X’s messaging capabilities.
