Tech Desk: India currently boasts a formidable fleet of 53 operational civilian satellites, marking a significant milestone in its space endeavors. This impressive count includes 21 communication, 21 Earth observation, 8 navigation, and 3 science satellites, according to recent government data. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently bolstered this capability with the launch of the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite, designed to provide comprehensive imaging and surveillance.

Since its first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975, India has launched 129 of its own satellites, alongside 342 foreign satellites for 36 countries. This robust program underscores India’s growing self-reliance and commercial prowess in the global space sector, providing critical services ranging from telecommunications to climate monitoring.

Looking ahead, India is set to dramatically expand its strategic space footprint with a massive Rs 27,000-crore Space-Based Surveillance program (SBS-3). This ambitious initiative plans for 52 new defence satellites by 2027-28, with a significant 31 satellites to be built by the private sector in collaboration with ISRO. These advanced satellites, some developed in partnership with France, will be crucial for tracking enemy movements, monitoring borders, and enhancing real-time coordination for India’s armed forces, solidifying India’s position as a major space power.
