IAF Demands Rapid Weapon Integration, Iterative Development from Defence Industry

IAF weapon integration

Tech Desk: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has issued a stark directive to the domestic defence industry: abandon slow, traditional development cycles for rapid weapon, software, and technology integration. Speaking at the NDTV Defence Summit 2026, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Tejpal Singh unveiled a transformative vision for India’s future combat architecture, emphasizing that modern warfare demands industry partners capable of swiftly integrating evolving technologies.

Air Marshal Singh highlighted the critical obsolescence of legacy timelines, stating that integrating a new weapon system must no longer drag into five- or seven-year programmes. Crucially, vital software updates and new algorithmic capabilities need to move seamlessly from labs to operational testing without waiting for scheduled mid-life upgrades (MLUs). The primary objective is to drastically shorten the incubation period between technological development and actionable military capability.

To achieve this accelerated pace, the IAF calls for unprecedented synergy between end-users and the defence sector. This collaborative approach fosters an iterative development model, where systems are tested, evaluated, modified, and re-tested rapidly. The focus shifts from rigid, large-scale procurement to practical agility, ensuring that not every experiment needs to mature into a massive programme.

Looking ahead, the IAF requires defence companies to weave disparate elements—sensors, munitions, unmanned platforms, software, and communication nodes—into a holistic and unified combat network. As India transitions towards a complex combat architecture featuring manned aircraft, drone swarms, advanced electronic warfare, and long-range precision weapons, rapid IAF weapon integration and scalable production will define success for the nation’s defence manufacturing sector.
