Tech Desk: Apple is reportedly poised for a significant expansion into the smart home market, partnering with LG Electronics to launch a new range of devices that directly challenge rivals like Google and Amazon. This ambitious move, expected around October 13, signals a formal reboot for Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem. The upcoming lineup, though LG-branded, includes a smart doorbell, deadbolt lock, thermostat, and a trio of security cameras – an indoor, outdoor, and floodlight variant.

Analyst Mark Gurman indicates that while the two tech giants collaborated on development, LG will handle manufacturing and product support, ensuring a broad market reach. Regulatory filings hint at specific products such as the “LG Video Doorbell Wired” and various “LG Cam” models, all designed to integrate seamlessly with Apple’s new smart home hub, an upgraded HomePod mini, and a fresh Apple TV. These devices are also expected to support modern smart home standards like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter.

For Apple, this partnership strengthens its HomeKit platform, offering a more comprehensive suite of accessories. For LG, it marks a substantial re-entry and expansion into categories like outdoor cameras, smart locks, and doorbells, which it hasn’t actively pursued in nearly a decade. This strategic alliance aims to carve out a larger share in the intensely competitive smart home landscape, setting the stage for a compelling showdown with established players.
